Talwar Nrutya Dance, gujarat
It is a dance form of the Dahod-Panchmahali’s Bhil community of central Gujarat. Talwar Nrutya, or sword dance, was originally performed to celebrate bravery during kingship, with the main events following victories in wars, but with time it has become a cultural and historical identity symbol for the Dahod-Panchmahali’s Bhil.
The Bhil, descendants of God Shankar, inhabit central Gujarat. They are considered agriculturalists primarily working rain-fed lands and worship natural elements along with Hindu deities.
Earlier the Talwar Nrutya was celebrated to commemorate victories; now it is being performed on festivals like Holi, Diwali, marriage, and religious occasions. The men exhibit vigorous sword skills, while women add graceful twirls with colorful fabrics.
Men and women wear traditional attire for Talwar Nrutya. Men dance wielding actual swords crafted by the Lavar community famous for its metalwork; while women twirl their colorful fabrics with elegance. Their costume is often complemented by traditional jewellery, all these together adding life to the festive ambience of the dance.
Talwar Nrutya is accompanied by fast-paced traditional folk dances. Men play the daguri, sharnai, dhol, and thali while performing the dance. The instruments keep up with the powerful rhythm and beat created as the sword swirls on the floor, and traditional songs sung during the dance add to the festive atmosphere.
