TheBavadia are found principally in Betul district, the Bondoya in the Jitgarh and Pachmarhi hills, and the Roma in the Amravati district. There is noBondoya sub-caste in Melghat but Goyara. The Goyara are scornedby other sub-castes for their consuming beef and the people of the other sub-castes do not. However, this seems to be a change in recent versions that was not coveredby previous work.

The Korkus have gotras in which they claimto have incarnated in the figure of a lion chasing, and scaring, the local Gadlis in a forest, during the time of Shiva. Legend has it that Shiva then announcedthat whatever was hidden by the Gadli would be the name of his caste, and also commanded them to marry in another Gotra.

The Korku of the Melghat has 16principle gotras though other regions of study are reported ellewhere. The gotras are namedas follows:

Gotras having the same country of origin, for example, both gar (tree) sages, such as Jambhu and Dhikar, are brother gotras and intermarriage was not allowed. But this prohibition has largely been discontinued, and the only marriagesforbidden are those between the same gotra. Somescholars have also referred to ‘Thakur’ gotra at certain places, which must be related to the ‘gadli’ groups headed by Rajputs that extorted tax from the lower regions of Vidarbha, (‘Tanka Mavaasi’). The Mavaasi are the most esteemed of the Korkus, and formerly were notorious as plunderers. There are alsoRaj Gadli, a group that consider themselves of finer status and who are entertained even by outsiders, by Brahmins for example.
